On August 29, 2025, the Balearic Islands’ Department of Health confirmed the first positive case of West Nile Virus in the region, specifically in a horse from the municipality of Maó. This detection has triggered public health alerts, as it marks the first locally acquired case ever recorded in the Balearic Islands.
In response, a special surveillance plan has been activated to:
Risk to Human Health: Although most human infections are asymptomatic or mild (fever, muscle aches), fewer than 1% of cases may lead to serious neurological complications such as encephalitis.
Horses as “Sentinels”: Horses do not transmit the disease, but they can become ill. Their detection serves as an epidemiological alert system, allowing for swift action and coordinated control measures.
